Recognize & Avoid Job Scams
Protect Yourself from Scams
For students seeking part-time jobs, the threat of scam jobs is a real concern. Scammers exploit vulnerabilities and target students' need for income and experience. Because your OSU email address is publicly available, scammers are able to bypass university officials, including OSU Career Services, and target you directly.
To counter this, a proactive approach is crucial to protect yourself from scammers. By following the tips below, you will develop a strong foundation for navigating disingenuous offers.
- Conduct Thorough Research
Before committing to any job, research the company extensively. Validate their legitimacy through their website, reviews and employee feedback. Reliable companies have a solid online presence and positive reviews.
- Set Realistic Expectations
Be cautious of overly attractive job offers. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Legitimate opportunities offer reasonable compensation based on industry standards.
- Guard Your Wallet
Do not cash checks or money orders and return money or gifts cards to a potential employer. When the checks bounce, the bank will hold you responsible, not the scammer. Do not wire funds via Western Union, MoneyGram or any other service.
- Exercise Caution with Remote Jobs
While genuine remote opportunities exist, verify legitimacy for each offer. Connect directly with the company, request documentation and validate authenticity.
- Protect Personal Data
Safeguard your sensitive information. Never share personal details until employment is confirmed. Legitimate employers request such information only for official purposes.
- Trust Your Instincts
Instincts are powerful. If something feels off, be wary. Spot unprofessional behavior, poor grammar or urgency in scammers. Authentic employers communicate professionally.
- Seek Guidance
Tap into trusted sources like OSU Career Services for advice. We can help evaluate offers and provide insights on local job markets and potential scams.
