Position Types
Federal Work Study
Work Study students are eligible to fill most OSU part-time position and numerous off-campus positions with non-profits and government agencies. Employing a work-study eligible student can save departments funding as the work-study program provides 70% of the student's salary with the organization paying the other 30%.
Part-Time Jobs
Part-Time jobs offer a valuable opportunity to gain practical work experience while balancing academic commitments. Students can explore diverse roles that not only contribute to their personal and professional development but also provide financial support.
Internships
Specifics of an internship may vary, but all internships should involve intentional learning with specific goals and objectives that support the student's academic and career interests. Students may pursue academic credit for an internship, whether paid or unpaid, depending on their department.
Graduate or
Teaching Assistants
Graduate Assistants serve in a variety of support roles, while working on their graduate degrees. Responsibilities often include serving as a teaching or research assistant. Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, peer advising or other support capacities.
Full-Time
Entry Level
Full-time entry-level positions are the beginning of a recent graduate’s career experience. Typically, in line with the candidate’s field of study, full-time entry level positions are often characterized by a learning curve, as recent graduates apply their academic knowledge to real-world scenarios.

OSU Career Services is pleased to offer two options for conducting your campus interviews. Your OSU Career Services Recruiting Partner will consult with you to determine which is best for your organization’s goals.
Room-only or day after career fair interviews allows you to interview students you meet during a fair. You make your schedule; we provide the space.
Pre-select interviews allows our staff to manage your interview schedule for you through the Job and Interview Portal. Once your job is posted, we help advertise directly to students and we will build your schedule based on the students you select.

Hiring International Students
Hiring international students studying in the U.S. on student or exchange visas is straightforward and offers benefits to both the employer and the student. They can work in their field during academic sessions, vacations, and post-study without changing their immigration status. These highly qualified students bring fresh perspectives, diverse languages, culture and adaptability to any organization,
- Hiring for Internships: Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is defined by the United States Citizen and Immigration Services as employment that is an “integral part” of a student’s course of study. This work experience may be required by the student’s degree program or may be an elective if it is an important part of the program of study.
Employers: To hire a student who is on CPT, the company only needs to give a letter of offer to the student, then the student will provide his/her I-20 indicating he/she has permission to work for the company. Length of employment is based on the student’s education program, which is usually one semester. - Hiring for Full-Time Employment: Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows international students to accept paid work in the United States. Practical training should allow them to gain experience in their field of study, which they normally could not obtain in their home country. Students with an F-1 visa status are eligible for up to 12 - 29 months of employment after graduation, depending on their area of study. Eligibility of a total of 29 months is for certain Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) degree holders only. All other students not in STEM are eligible for up to 12 months of employment after graduation.
Employers: Employers should verify the international student possesses an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Employment cannot begin until the student presents a valid EAD card. - Hiring for Full-Time Employment: H-1B Non-Immigrant Visa
The H-1B (Temporary Worker) is a non-immigrant visa in the United States under the Immigration & Nationality Act, section 101(a)(15)(H). It allows U.S. employers to employ foreign guest workers in specialty occupations. There is a six year maximum employment length limitation on H-1B; therefore, some international individuals who intend to remain in the U.S. often try to obtain permanent resident status during their H-1B period.
Employers: An employer should seek an immigration attorney for advice before petitioning for an employee’s H-1B Visa.
